The Academy’s in-the-works Museum Of Motion Pictures will be called the David Geffen Theater in recognition of a recent $25m pledge from the David Geffen Foundation.
The museum will be located next to the Los Angeles County Museum Of Art and is scheduled to open in early 2017. It will contain approximately 300,000 sq ft of galleries, exhibition spaces, theatres, screening rooms, education centres and special event spaces.
“David’s support of this project is transformative,” said Academy Museum campaign chair Bob Iger. “It takes a large and diverse group of supporters to build a project on the scale of the Academy Museum. David joins an esteemed group of individuals, companies and foundations who are leading the charge.”
The Academy launched the museum’s capital campaign, co-chaired by Annette Bening and Tom Hanks, in 2012 and has since secured more than half of its target.

In a separate announcement, the Anti-Defamation League will honour DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg with the ADL Entertainment Industry Award at the Centennial Entertainment Industry Dinner on May 8 in Beverly Hills.
