Director, Stars Of Tomorrow, 2009.

Alex Winckler and Neil Marshall

For someone who grew up watching Steven Spielberg films, Winckler’s work displays a surprisingly low-key, indie sensibility. His debut, the short film Ralph, about a hapless young man who arrives in Marseilles to realise he has no way of contacting the girl he loves, was nominated for a Bafta this year following a successful festival career. It shows Winckler’s sympathetic observational eye and confident grasp of narrative. He changed gears with his second film, The Harvest, a bleak tale of two thieves, one played by fellow Star of Tomorrow Michael Socha, made for Channel 4’s Coming Up series and due for broadcast in the UK later this year. Winckler is now developing a dark short film about family tensions, as well as a feature about young footballers trying to turn professional.
