Life Of Pi, Argo and Beasts Of The Southern Wild are among the Institute’s honours roster, while The Master, Flight and The Hobbit fail to make the cut.

The American Film Institute claims to be the only national organisation that honours every film’s creative ensemble.

The top ten selections are based on “works which best advance the art of the moving image; enhance the rich cultural heritage of America’s art form; inspire audiences and artists alike; and/or make a mark on American society.”

“AFI Awards celebrates America’s storytellers as collaborators,” said AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale. “We are honoured to bring together artists as a community, without competition, to acknowledge the gifts they have given the world in 2012.”

AFI will honour the creative ensembles for each of the selections at an invitation-only luncheon on Jan 11 in Los Angeles.
