In 2004, the government introduced tax credits to boost local production and attract international shoots, which offered a 20% tax deduction on capital investment in new production companies.

But while legislation for the tax credits has been passed, it appears the structures to use them are still not in place, which is partly a symptom of Taiwan's political in-fighting.

A few big-budget productions, including $20m action title Chasing The Dragon, set to star Wesley Snipes, have scouted locations in Taiwan but so far nothing has committed.
