DVD appears to have gained a foothold in the Australian market according to recent statistics that show that 63% of video stores were carrying DVDs at the end of 1999 compared to only 35% at the end of the previous year.

In addition, a total of 529 titles were released during 1999 compared to 117 in 1998. Warner Home Video was the most active DVD distributor with 87 releases, although it was tenth on the video rental release list, which was topped by Roadshow.

CIC had Australia's top video title in 1999 with Sliding Doors but it was Buena Vista who dominated the chart with four of the top 10 spots:
