Intolerable Cruelty lead the field with a A$1,916,705 gross from 228 screens on its opening weekend. Putting aside the only IMAX picture in the chart, it also had the best screen average. This positive start, combined with its star power and the good word of mouth surrounding it, indicates a very happy Australian season ahead for distributor UIP.

Another opener, Roadshow's Freddy vs Jason, which took A$1,317,912 from 188 screens, also came over the top of last weekend's strongest performer BVI's Kill Bill: Volume 1, but not by much. Quentin Tarantino paid Australia a visit as part of the campaign and the film is on many more screens than both of the other films.

The only other new film to join the chart was Icon's Mambo Italiano, which took A$402,873 from 113 screens to land in seventh position.
