Marvel Studios’ superhero soup has reached $373.2m after a mere two weekends and combines with the $628.9m international running total to reach $1,002.1m at the global box office. It is now the eleventh biggest global release in history.

In the latest in what has been a torrent of box office records, The Avengers has become the first film to gross more than $100m in its second weekend. It was active in 4,349 sites, giving rise to an excellent $23,721 per-site average.

The action epic has become the fastest film to reach $200m (three days) and the quickest to $300m (nine days). It has scored the biggest Saturday and Sunday of all time, registering $69.5m and $57m, respectively.

Warner Bros’ Dark Shadows, the TV series adaptation that reunites director Tim Burton with Johnny Depp, opened far behind in second place on $28.8m and Girl In Progress with Eva Mendes arrived in tenth place on $1.4m.

Best Exotic Marigold Hotel expanded from 27 theatres to 178 and climbed eight places to number eight on $2.7m for $3.7m.

Next weekend’s wide releases are: Paramount’s comedy The Dictator starring Sacha Baron Cohen; Universal’s international hit Battleship from director Peter Berg; and Lionsgate’s all-star rom-com What To Expect When You’re Expecting.
