UPDATED WITH ANALYSIS: Gravity leads the pack with 11 nominations; 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle follow closely with 10.

Captain Phillips has nine nominations. Behind the Candelabra and Saving Mr. Banks have five each.

Philomena, Rush and The Wolf of Wall Street have four nominations. Blue Jasmine, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis and Nebraska have each been nominated three times. The Act of Killing, The Butler and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug have two nominations apiece.

Full list of nominees below.

The nominations didn’t offer any huge surprises, but there are some notable developments.

Dallas Buyers Club was shut out of the BAFTA nominations, which might have been expected for Matthew McConaughey for lead actor and Jared Leto for supporting. Idris Elba missed out on a mention for his role as Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom; as did James McAvoy for the low-budget Filth or Robert Redford for All Is Lost. Ralph Fiennes’ Dickens biopic The Invisible Woman only gets one nomination for costumes and Roger Michell’s Le Week-End was shut out, as was Spike Jonze’s Her.

In terms of potential influencing of Oscar nominees (Oscar nomination ballots close this afternoon Los Angeles time), Rush picks up steam after its BAFTA nods for British Film, editing, sound and most importantly supporting actor for Daniel Bruhl. Oprah Winfrey performance in The Butler, passed over by the Golden Globes, secures a supporting actress nomination. The Coen Brothers, snubbed by the directors’ and writers’ guilds in the States, do land an original screenplay nomination for Inside Llewyn Davis.

The Wolf of Wall Street also picks up steam with its four nominations. On the other hand, August: Osage County slips in the race securing only one BAFTA nomination for Julia Roberts (and nothing for Meryl Streep). Saving Mr Banks fares well but misses out on a Best Film mention.

Clio Barnard’s burgeoning career gets another boost after her critcially lauded Cannes premiere The Selfish Giant lands a nomination for Best British Film. There are six, not five, nominees in that category for the first time.

The Act of Killing, the Danish-produced documentary about the legacy of Indonesia’s death squads, scores nominations in both the documentary and foreign-language film categories.

Lupita Nyong’o, announced yesterday as a Rising Star nominee, also adds a supporting actress nomination for her starmaking role in 12 Years a Slave.

With her nomination for Philomena, Judi Dench becomes BAFTA film awards’ most-nominated actress in history. Woody Allen becomes the most-nominated director in BAFTA history.

Behind the Candelabra’s five nominations won’t have any influence on the Oscars as the film’s HBO launch there means it is ineligible for the Academy Awards.

Gravity and Philomena are each nominated for both Best British Film and Best Film; while Philomena is obviously homegrown, Warner Bros’ Gravity is produced by the UK’s David Heyman and was shot at Pinewood and Shepperton with VFX by London-based Framestore and 3D supervision by London-based Vision 3.

Among distributors, Warner Bros leads the pack with 20, followed by eOne with 15, Entertainment with 13, Sony with 11, Disney with 8, and StudioCanal and Universal with 7 each.

The BAFTA ceremony will be held Feb 16.
