The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) bestowed further glory on IFC Films’ coming-of-age drama on the day of Oscar nominations as the film collected best picture, director, supporting actress and young actor honours.

Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel, which led Thursday’s (January 15) Academy Awards nominations roster on nine apiece, also figured in the 20th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards in Hollywood.

The former collected the most nominations of the night with seven, among them best actor for Michael Keaton, acting ensemble, original screenplay, cinematography, editing, score and actor in a comedy.

Keaton became the first person in the 20-year history of the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards to win three prizes in a single night for best actor, actor in a comedy and part of the Birdman ensemble.

The Grand Budapest Hotel earned three awards for best comedy, art direction and costume design.

JK Simmons won best supporting actor for Whiplash, Emily Blunt took best actress in an action film for Edge Of Tomorrow and Bradley Cooper collected corresponding honours in the actor category for American Sniper.

Guardians Of The Galaxy was named best action film, while Interstellar earned best sci-fi/horror and The Lego Movie – the surprise shut-out in the Oscar nominations – earned best animation. Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure from Sweden, another film to miss out on an Oscar nod, won best foreign film.

As previously announced, Kevin Costner, Ron Howard and Jessica Chastain received special honours for Lifetime Achievement Awards, LOUIS XIII Genius Award and MVP Award, respectively.

The BFCA represents close to 300 television, radio and online critics.
