Leaders at the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) said the chief content officer will receive this year’s Industry Tribute at the 24th annual Gothams in New York on December 1.

The award is given to “a career veteran who has significantly influenced the motion picture industry.”

Sarandos has led content acquisition for Netflix since 2000 and recently led efforts to develop original content for Netflix, resulting in 31 Emmy nominations.

“We are honoured to present our 2014 Industry Tribute to Ted Sarandos, a visionary who is credited with reshaping how, when and where we watch entertainment,” said IFP executive director Joana Vicente.

“He saw where streaming was going long before most in our industry, and was the first to create online original programming and allow us to binge entire seasons of it to our hearts’ content at one go.”

Previous honourees include Jeff Skoll, James Schamus, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Sheila Nevins, Jonathan Sehring, the late film critic Roger Ebert and Bob and Harvey Weinstein.

The deadline for submissions for Gothams consideration is September 19. Nominees will be announced on October 23.
