The Golden Globes set the internet alight on Sunday as the first major awards ceremony of the season saw stars of the big screen pick up the prestigious trophies… but who generated the most clicks?

The figures compiled by Way To Blue - using Sysomos data covering Twitter, news, forums and blogs - saw Richard Linklater’s winning film, Boyhood secure the most hits.

There were more than 33,000 mentions of the coming of age film, which won best drama, with Linklater beating the likes of David Fincher and Wes Anderson to claim the lions share among the best director nominees.

Best comedy winner The Grand Budapest Hotel checked in nearly 16,000 mentions but was topped by rival Birdman, which generated more than 21,000 and saw lead actor (and Golden Globe winner) Michael Keaton take nearly three-quarters of the best actor mentions.

Benedict Cumberbatch proved as popular as ever with online chatter by photobombing Meryl Streep during the ceremony and generating nearly 27,400 mentions…  as well as a new phrase: the Cumberbomb.
