Trumbull will receive an Oscar statuette at the Scientific and Technical Awards presentation on Feb 11 in Beverly Hills in recognition of a “lifetime of technical contributions and leadership in the motion picture industry.”

He worked on visual effects on 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Blade Runner and The Tree Of Life, among others, and has secured more than a dozen patents for pioneering techniques such as virtual reality systems and high frame rate photography.

Trumbull earned three Academy Award nominations for visual effects and received a scientific and engineering award in 1992 as part of the design team for the CP-65 Showscan Camera System for 65mm motion picture photography.
