The Redentors were handed out for the Premiere Brazil strand of home-grown films as the festival came to a close on Thursday night (11).

Film critic and programmer Kleber Mendonça Filho’s first feature Neighbouring Sounds (O Som Ao Redor) [pictured] won the best fiction feature and screenplay Redentors.

Another former journalist Juliana Reis saw her directorial debut AE-Autoexposure (Disparos) collect three awards for editing, photography and best supporting actor award for Caco Ciocler.

José Eduardo Belmonte’s thriller The Gorilla (O Gorilla) earned honours for best actor for Otavio Mueller and best supporting actress for Alessandra Negrini. Leandra Leal won the best actress award for Eden.

The best director Redentor went to Eryk Rocha for his documentary Jards while César Oiticica Filho’s Helio Oiticica won best feature documentary and best short went to Marcus Vinicius Vasconcelos for Barrel Organ (Realejo).

A special jury prize (image research) went to Antonio Venâncio for his work on Helio Oiticica, Dossiê Jango, Sobral – O Homem Que Não Tinha Preço and O Dia Que Durou 21 Anos, as well as for his extensive work in recent Brazilian documentaries such as Palavra Encantada, Vinicius and A Musica Segundo Tom Jobim.

The Premiere Brazil Novos Rumos (New Trends) sidebar split the best feature award to Rubens Rewald’s Super Nada and Emílio Domingos’ Passinho Dance Off (A Batalha Do Passinho). Best short went to Song For My Sad Sister (Canção Para Minha Irmã) and the jury special mention went to Jair Rodrigues for his performance in Super Nada and to the late actor Gambá for his performance in Passinho Dance Off.

In the audience awards, Luciano Moura’s directorial debut Father’s Child (A Busca) won best film and Paulo Henrique Fontenelle’s Jango Report (Dossie Jango) took the prize for best documentary. Best short went to Sergio Duran and Gabriela Temer’s Zéfiro Explícito.

The FIPRESCI jury presented their prize for best Latina American film in the festival toBeauty (Nosilatiaj La Belleza) by Argentina’s  Daniela Seggiaro.

The festival ran from Sept 27-Oct 11 and feature more than 400 films. There were more than 300,000 attendees and guests included Benh Zeitlin, Valerie Faris, Roland Joffé, Leox Carax, Kylie Minogue, Fernando Trueba, Daniel Burman and Laurent Cantet.
