Woody Allen won Best Original Screenplay at the WGA Awards on Sunday night for Midnight in Paris; Alexander Payne, Jim Rash and Nat Faxon won for Best Adapted Screenplay

Alexander Payne, Jim Rash and Nat Faxon and Woody Allen took home the major screenplay prizes at the Writers Guild of America awards on Sunday night in LA, for The Descendants and Midnight in Paris, respectively.

Midnight in Paris beat out 50/50, written by Will Reiser; Bridesmaids, written by Annie Mumolo & Kristen Wiig; Win Win, written by Tom McCarthy, and Young Adult, written by Diablo Cody.

The Descendants, based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemming, bettered The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo screenplay by Steven Zaillian, based on the novel by Stieg Larsson; The Help screenplay by Tate Taylor, based on the novel by Kathryn Stockett; Hugo screenplay by John Logan, based on the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick and Moneyball screenplay by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin, story by Stan Chervin, based on the book by Michael Lewis.

The award for best Documentary Screenplay went to Better This World, written by Katie Galloway and Kelly Duane de la Vega, while the big winners on the TV side included the writers of Modern Family for comedy series, Breaking Bad for drama series and Homeland for best new series.
