The shape of water

Sally Hawkins, Gary Oldman, Judi Dench, Saoirse Ronan, Claire Foy, Daniel Kaluuya and Benedict Cumberbatch are among the film and TV nominees for the 24th annual Screen Actors Guild announced on Wednesday (December 13).

Hawkins is up for lead actress for The Shape Of Water alongside Dench for Victoria & Abdul, as well as Ronan for Lady Bird, Frances McDormand for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Margot Robbie for I, Tonya.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri leads on four nods, followed by Lady Bird on three. There was no recognition for Phantom Thread’s Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps, nor for The Post stars Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

The absence of Kevin Spacey (House Of Cards) and Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent)  in the TV categories comes as little surprise in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations and follows their shut-outs by the HFPA in the Globe voting earlier this week.

Lead male contenders include Oldman for Darkest Hour, James Franco for The Disaster Artist, which is gaining ground among voters, Denzel Washington for Roman J. Israel, Esq. and the two breakouts of the season: Timothée Chalamet for Call Me By Your Name, and Kaluuya for Get Out.

Cumberbatch is in contention for the lead male in a TV movie or limited series category for Sherlock: The Lying Detective, alongside Emmy winner Alexander Skarsgård for Big Little Lies, and Geoffrey Rush for Genius.

Emmy winners Laura Dern and Nicole Kidman are up against fellow Big Little Lies cast member Reese Witherspoon for the female lead category in a terrific week for the trio that saw all three earn Golden Globe nods. Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon from Feud: Bette And Joan round out the five nominees.

The Crown star Foy competes for the female lead in a drama series against Elisabeth Moss for The Handmaid’s Tale, Laura Linney for Ozark, Robin Wright for House Of Cards, and Millie Bobby Brown for Stranger Things.

Online voting is encouraged and paper ballots are available only upon request received by January 8, 2018. All votes must be received by noon on January 19, 2018. The awards show is scheduled for January 21, 2018.
