The Writers Guild Of America announced its winners in simultaneous bicoastal shows on February 1 and in the process shed some light on the two of the more inscrutable races of the season. Separately, animation and cinematography came under the spotlight in stand-alone shows.

Spike Jonze’s script for Her won original screenplay, while Billy Ray prevailed in the adapted category for Captain Phillips.

Ray adapted his script from the book Richard Phillips wrote with Stephan Talty, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, And Dangerous Days At Sea.

Her won the Golden Globe and has scooped other awards this season, while this marks the first victory for Ray’s Captain Phillips script.

Both screenplays are in contention for Academy Awards in their respective original and adapted categories.

Sarah Polley won best documentary screenplay for Stories We Tell.
