Cannes joint jury prize winner Persepolis will open the Bangkok International Film Festival on July 19. The animated feature is also competing in the international section.

A feature debut for co-directors Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Parronaud, the picture is based on Satrapi's graphic novel of her own life and set during the Islamic Revolution in Iran and her subsequent exile in Europe.

The closing night on July 29 will feature the world premiere of Muay Thai Chaiya, a martial arts drama about three small-town friends who fight their way to become the best Muay Thai Chaiya fighter in Bangkok.

Produced by Five Star, the Thai picture marks the solo directorial debut of Kongkait Komesiri who started as a screenwriter with credits such as box office hit Bang Rajan by Thanit Jitnukul, Art Of The Devil 2 which he co-directed and more recently Wisit Sasanatieng's The Unseeable.
