Bavaria Media has teamed upwith The Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation torestore Fassbinder's classic 14-part TV opus Berlin Alexanderplatz,which first aired on ARD in 1980.

The project's originaldirector of photography Xaver Schwarzenbergerand the production manager of the series Dieter Minx are supervising therestoration with Juliane Lorenz, Fassbinder'seditor and the president of the Foundation.

They are digitally restoringthe more than 900 minutes of 16mm footage.

Adapted from Alfred Doblin's novel, the epic series shot between June 1979 andApril 1980 and had its international premiere at the Venice International FilmFestival.

Bavaria Film International ishandling international distribution on the project which will be ready in early2007. Subsidising the gigantic project are the Kulturstiftungdes Bundes, the FilmstiftungNordrhein-Westfalen, the MedienboardBerlin-Brandenburg and German Films, with the support of The Museum Of Modern Art in New York and the FassbinderFoundation.
