A new WCF programme entitled WCF Factories will contribute in the near future to the greater creative and structural autonomy of African cinema.
Filmmakers throughout Africa will receive additional support from the Berlinale’s World Cinema Fund (WCF) thanks to the decision of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Deutsche Welle/DW Akademie to become the fund’s new cooperation partners.
A new WCF programme entitled WCF Factories will contribute in the near future to the greater creative and structural autonomy of African cinema.
WCF’s two new partners had already shown their commitment to African cinema last year when Tom Tykwer announced at the 2010 Berlinale that One Day Films and Ginger Ink, producer of Hawa Essuman’s Soul Boy - had joined forces with the Deutsche Welle Akademie to launch the FilmAfrica! initiative which received €1m in support from BMZ over two years and additional backing from the Goethe Institut in Nairobi.
The World Cinema Fund was founded in October 2004 as a joint initiative of the German Federal Cultural Foundation and the Berlinale, with the Goethe Institute coming on board as a partner two months later.
