UPDATED SEPT 2: Lucrative returns in China continue to pour in as Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes delivered the fourth biggest opening day for a non-local film, helping it soar past $400m at the international box office.

UPDATE: The action sequel grossed a confirmed $51.5m overall and has reached $408.2m, way more than the 2011 original’s $305m final tally with imminent launches in Japan and Venezuela waiting in the wings.

Only Iron Man 3 and the third and fourth – most recent – Transformers editions have fared better in China on their first day. Chinafilm handled the Chinese release of Apes, which has amassed approximately $611m worldwide, mostly through Fox.

DreamWorks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon 2 brought in a further $10.9m for $426.6m, buoyed by a $6.1m debut in China. The animation returned to the top in Italy as $1.1m elevated the haul to $9.2m after three sessions.

Several Fox International Productions releases were in action. El Niño opened top in Spain on $3.9m and close to 50% market share, while Doktorspiele arrived at number two in Germany on $2.3m for the third best launch for a local film of the year-to-date. Guten Tag, Ramon grossed $818,000 in its second weekend in Mexico to reach $2.3m and Rico, Oskar Und Die Tieferschatten has amassed $4.7m after eight sessions in Germany.  

Let’s Be Cops added $7.1m for an early $10.4m, led by a $2.8m number two debut in the UK and a number three $2m launch in Russia. The comedy arrived at number two in the UAE on $601,000.

The Fault In Our Stars grossed $3.7m for $162.9m and is a hit in France where $1.9m boosted the score to $5.2m after two. Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For added $1.7m for $6.7m after two.

UNIVERSAL PICTURES INTERNATIONAL

Lucy crossed $150m worldwide and added $27.1m from 48 territories to stand at $107.2m through Universal markets, rising to $31.2m for $151.6m factoring in EuropaCorp markets.

The thriller arrived at number one in Mexico on $4.3m, Brazil on $2.4m, Croatia, Indonesia, South Africa, Thailand and Trinidad. It opened on $2.6m in Japan to rank as the top Hollywood release.

Lucy held at number one in its second UK session on $3.3m for $13.1m and stayed top in its fourth session in France through EuropaCorp where it has grossed $35.1m. 

The Legendary Pictures horror release As Above/So Below opened in five territories this weekend, taking $1.4m for an early $2.4m. The UK generated $710,000 for number eight. 

The Purge: Anarchy stands at $34m, Neighbors $118m and Boyhood $9m from 10 Universal territories.

WALT DISNEY STUDIOS MOTION PICTURES INTERNATIONAL

Guardians OF The Galaxy grossed $19.7m from 68 territories for $273.1m internationally and $547.7m worldwide. The Marvel Studios hit opened in Germany on $7m and still has debuts on the way in China, Japan and Italy. 

Guardians has amassed $41.2m in the UK, $35.8m in Russia, $21.2m in Australia, $19.1m in Mexico, $16.8m in France, $16.6m in Brazil, $10.8m in South Korea and $7.7m in Spain, $7m in Germany and $5.6m in Malaysia.

PARAMOUNT PICTURES INTERNATIONAL

UPDATE: The action film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles delivered $13.8m from 43 territories to climb to $112.3m, propelled by a disappointing $2.5m South Korean debut and a $2.3m Brazilian hold for $14.8m after three weekends. Russia has produced $27.5m after four.

Hercules grossed $9.3m to reach $103.3m. The adventure opened in France on $3.8m.

Transformers: Age Of Extinction added $3.2m for $828.8m and brought in $1.5m in its second session in Venezuela for $5.8m.

WARNER BROS PICTURES INTERNATIONAL

UPDATE: Into The Storm burst into four territories and scored $13.8m from 51 markets to surge to an early $50.9m.

Top of the pile was a number one $5.5m launch in South Korea that dethroned local titans The Pirates in its fourth weekend and Roaring Currents in its fifth.

Italy delivered a number two $1.3m result, Brazil $1.1m and Spain $600,000. Russia has grossed $6.6m, the UK and Japan $3.9m apiece and France $2.7m.

If I Stay took $4.3m from its first international forays in 10 markets, fired up by a number three $1.1m debut in Russia and a $1m arrival in Australia, $837,500 in the UK and $817,000 in Mexico.

Argentinean production Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales) took in a further $2.7m from 374 screens in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Peru to reach $6.6m.

Rurouni Kenshin 2 generated $2.3m for $43.7m in three Asian markets in release. In Japan, the sequel has surpassed the first Rurouni Kenshin by 41%. The third installment, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, opens in Japan on September 13.

SONY PICTURES RELEASING INTERNATIONAL

UPDATE: Deliver Us From Evil grossed $5.4m in 29 markets to climb to $25.2m and opened top in Russia on $3.6m and top in Chile on $250,000.

22 Jump Street added $4.2m in 31 markets for $123.9m. The comedy debuted in France at number five on $1.8m and opened in sixth place in Mexico on $504,000. Germany added $520,000 for $14.1m.
