AUGUST 31 UPDATE: With no real pretenders to usurp it, Universal’s Straight Outta Compton held on to top berth for the third consecutive weekend and climbed to $134m.

Straight Outta Compton

TriStar’s drama War Room opened in second place on $11.4m, an excellent result given the stated $3m production cost, while TWC pick-up No Escape with Owen Wilson, Lake Bell and Pierce Brosnan arrived at number four on $8.1m.

Paramount-Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation slipped one place to number three and has reached $170.2m and is doing well considering the $479.2m global tally.

Universal’s Jurassic World grossed $3m from 1,239 sites for $642.9m. Fox’s Hitman: Agent 47 fell to number seven in its second session and has grossed a dismal $15.6m, while the ill-fated Fantastic Four dropped out of the top ten in its fourth weekend and stands at a miserable $52.7m.

Warner Bros’ The Man From U.NC.L.E. has amassed a lowly $34.1m and ranks sixth in its third weekend. The Gift continues to perform well for STX Entertainment given its stated $4m budget and ranks number ten on $35.8m after four.

Zac Efron starrer We Are Your Friends opened outside the top 12 via Warner Bros on $1.8m. Distribution chiefs and StudioCanal will doubtless talk up the film’s ancillary potential, however the US theatrical debut is a certified flop given the sizeable 2,333 theatre count.

Turbo Kid opened via Epic Pictures Releasing on $50,000 from 38 venues.

Roadside Attractions opened Sundance selection Z For Zachariah on $56,902 from 29 sites, while Oscilloscope opened The Second Mother on $24,086 in three sites. IFC debuted Queen Of The Earth on $11,360 in two.

Overall box office for the top 12 generated $68,887,912 and dropped 19.3% against last weekend and fell 21.9% against the comparable session in 2014.

The summer blockbuster season, currently tracking 1.8% ahead of its 2014 counterpart, officially ends over Labor Day next weekend. The wide releases are EuropaCorp’s The Transporter Refueled and Bill Bryson adaptation A Walk In The Woods via Broad Green starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte.
