Marvel Studios’ blockbuster grossed considerably more than the $200.3m estimate issued by Disney on Sunday, according to official results issued on Monday (7).

This combines with the $447.4m international running total for a $654.8m global tally after the first 12 days.

“Marvel’s The Avengers is something we’ve been carefully building toward since we began production on the first Iron Man film, and it is quite rewarding for all of us that The Avengers is appealing around the globe to both passionate fans and general audiences alike,” Marvel Studios head and The Avengers producer Kevin Feige said.

“It is a testament to all involved with this film that audiences across the board are embracing the film in this record-setting way.”

“Joss Whedon, Kevin Feige and the whole Marvel team have done something really incredible with The Avengers,” Disney evp of theatrical exhibition sales and distribution Dave Hollis said. “From the super-talented cast to the spectacular visual effects, it’s a grand slam, and we’re proud to be a part of this history-making film.”

  • IMAX confirmed on Monday that The Avengers generated the company’s biggest domestic opening weekend on $15.3m from 275 digital IMAX theatres for a per-screen average of approximately $56,000. Internationally, 176 IMAX theatres brought in $6.1m, which raised the running total outside North America to $16m and the global tally to $31.3m.
