UPDATED SEPT 23: Showbox International’s The Face Reader added an estimated $22.3m as the South Korean historical drama’s international running total reached an early $39.4m.

Song Kang-ho, Lee Jung-jae and Baek Yun-shik star in the story about a legendary face reader, a man who can interpret signals and motivations from someone’s face, who discovers a plot to overthrow the country’s leader.

  • UPDATED: Smurfs 2 grossed $13.1m through Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI) from 9,515 screens in 71 markets as the running total climbed to $237.4m.

There were four debuts including a $2.8m number two launch in Italy on 620 screens and number one launches in South Africa on $454,848 from 123 and New Zealand on $281,864 from 100.

China delivered the biggest haul on $4.4m from 4,316 for $18m after two weekends and an undetermined rank heading into the October holidays. Germany has generated $20.9m after eight sessions and the UK $17.8m after the same period.

Elysium generated $9.8m from 5,848 in 54 markets for $157.5m. The sci-fi arrived top of the table in Brazil on $2.4m from 382 and added $1.8m in its third weekend in China to stand at $23.6m. A $1.6m Japanese debut on 324 resulted in fourth place.

The UK has returned $13.5m for Elysium after five weekends and France $13.1m after six. Spain has delivered $10.5m after six.

White House Down grossed $8.6m from 4,466 in 39 to reach $111.5m. 2 Guns grossed a further $2.6m from 27 SPRI markets to reach $9.3m. Grown Ups 2 stands at $94.9m through SPRI and One Direction: This Is Us has grossed $33.9m. This Is The End opened in Russia on $1.7m from 584 in fourth place and the comedy has amassed $19.8m internationally.

Last weekend’s emphatic number one North American release Insidious: Chapter 2 opened top in the Philippines on $1.2m from 116, combining with debuts in Poland and Uruguay for an early $1.4m SPRI running total, rising to $9.3m including revenues from Blumhouse International.

  • UPDATED: DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo is streaking towards the $100m mark through Fox International following an $11.4m weekend haul from 2,626 screens in 20 markets that resulted in a relatively early $91.m running total.

The animation scored an $8.6m number three debut in China on 1,500 screens and opened top in Australia and Israel on $1.5m from 482 and $660,585 from 56, respectively.

Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters added $6.1m from 3,719 in 39 for $112.7m and opened in second place in Australia on $1.3m from 433. The Wolverine stands at $241.3m, Epic $153.9m, The Heat $65m and The Internship $43.4m.

Fox International Production’s Argentinean release Septimo held firm at number one for the third weekend in a row as a 41% drop resulted in $705,000 from 180 screens for a $4.2m running total. Septimo is Fox’s fourth biggest local currency hit in Argentina for the year-to-date behind The Croods, Life Of Pi and The Wolverine.

  • UPDATED: Despicable Me 2 is closing in on $500m following a $10.8m session through Universal Pictures International from 3,372 venues in 41 territories that propelled the tally to $494m and $854.7m worldwide.

The family release opened top in Japan on $6.5m from 322, some 42% higher than the 2010 original. The second weekend in South Korea produced $2.1m from 275 for $4.6m and Despicable Me 2 remained in the top five in Russia for the sixth weekend and has reached $33.7m.

Jobs, which Universal is distributing in Russia through its deal with DT Productions, arrived at number one on $3.3m from 630, scoring what the distributor claims is the biggest debut for a US biopic.

Working Title rom-com About Time starring Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson debuted in seven territories on $2m from 806 theatres for an early $9.4m. The film added $1.1m in the UK from 457 for $8.4m after three weekends.

. added $2m from 1,449 venues in 20 territories for $37.1m and debuted in the UK at number six on $840,000 from 375, Spain on $600,000 from 310 and Argentina on $170,000 from 94. The action release opens this week in Mexico and Brazil.

Kick-Ass 2 has generated $30.5m from 35 territories and opened well in Colombia on $94,000 from 50, which is roughly 10 times bigger than the 2010 original’s debut. The World’s End stands at $18.3m.

  • UPDATED: Warner Bros Pictures International reported that The Conjuring added a confirmed $10.5m from 3,300 screens in 58 territories as the running total went up to $150m. The horror smash opened top in South Korea on $5.4m and added $1.2m from 395 in its second weekend in Brazil for $4m. Mexico stands at $18.1m, the UK $16m, Russia $10m, France $9m, Australia $8.1m, Spain $7.8m, Argentina $6.5m, Italy $4.9m and Germany $4.4m.

We’re The Millers climbed to $85.1m following a further $10.1m from 3,805 in 55. The comedy arrived in France on $1.4m from 245 and added $1.3m in Italy from 303 for $3.4m after two sessions. Latest figures put Millers on $17.4m in Russia after six weekends, where it has overtaken The Hangover films and Ted to rank as the all-time biggest R-rated comedy. The film has grossed $12.1m in the UK after five, $8.7m in Germany after four, $8.3m Australia after six and $2.6m in Mexico.

  • UPDATED: Riddick brought in a further $8.7m through Lionsgate International licensees over the weekend to push the running total to $36.1m. The action thriller opened in second place in France on $1.8m from 368 sites and arrived at number three in Germany on $1.2m from 387. Riddick held at number two in Russia on $2.8m from 650 in its second weekend for $8.6m. Elsewhere the film has amassed $4.2m in the UK, $2.5m in Spain and $1.8m in Italy.

Lionsgate International reported that the number one North American release Prisoners grossed $1.2m from 300 screens in 13 minor markets. Upcoming releases including Russia and the UK this week.

  • Pain And Gain delivered $1.4m through Paramount Pictures International from 1,032 cinemas in 24 markets to reach $31.4m and stands at $2.4m in France after two sessions. World War Z remains active in 18 markets and has generated $337.2m, while Star Trek Into Darkness stands at $238.2m.  
  • Planes produced $7.2m through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International and has reached $69m. The animation arrived in Australia on $700,000.

Planes stands at $12.2m in the UK, $7.4m in Spain, $6.3m in Germany, $5.3m in Mexico, $5.2m in Russia, $3.7m in Brazil, $3.1m in Poland, $2.9m in Argentina, $2.3m in Venezuela and $1.9m in Turkey.

Monsters University added $2.8m from 55 territories for $470.4m. In the second weekend in South Korea, where Thanksgiving Holiday celebrations are in full swing, the Pixar hit added $1.9m for a $4.1m running total.

Japan has been by far the most successful territory on $90.1m, followed by the UK on $45.1m, Mexico on $38.2m, China on $32.5m, Argentina on $23.7m, Australia on $22.4m, Russia on $20.9m and France on $17.3m.

Brazil has generated $16.9m, Spain $15.1m, Germany $13.7m, Italy $12.2m, Hong Kong $10.5m, Colombia $9.9m, Venezuela $8.7m, Chile $8.3m and Taiwan $8.2m.

  • Rush climbed up to the top of the table in its second weekend in the UK through StudioCanal, adding $2.4m for $7.7m. The film opened in Italy at number two on $2.3m through Andrea Leone Films, number four in Spain on $540,000 through Aurum, number three in Taiwan on $500,000 through Lots Home Entertainment and number three in new Zealand on $160,000 through eOne. Exclusive Media handles international sales and co-financed the film 50-50 with Cross Creek Pictures. According to sources Rush added $5.5m over the weekend to reach $11.2m.
