JANUARY 1 UPDATE: Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars behemoth added $38m worldwide on December 31 to reach $1.33bn and rank as the eighth biggest release of all time.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens added $15.1m internationally as it climbed to $679.2m with the Chinese debut set for January 9. A further $22.9m in North America elevated the running total to $652m.

Disney executives said they expected the film to finish the year as the top release of 2015 ahead of Jurassic World’s $652.3m and overtake Titanic’s $658.7m on Friday to become the second biggest release in history behind Avatar on $760.5m.

The film ranked as the fifth biggest of 2015 internationally and the fourth biggest worldwide in 2015 and the eight biggest in history.

The Force Awakens has grossed $129.4m in the UK, $71.4m in Germany, $60.6m in France, $45.5m in Australia, $42.9m in Japan, $23.7m in Spain, $22.5m in Italy and $22.4m in Mexico.

South Korea has generated $19.9m, Russia $19.4m, Brazil $18.7m, Sweden $13.3m and Poland $11.4m.

DECEMBER 31 UPDATE: Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars behemoth ranks as the fourth biggest global release of 2015 and the ninth biggest of all time on $1.293bn.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens added an estimated $64.8m worldwide on Wednesday to become the fifth biggest release of the year and the eighth biggest film of all time, overtaking Frozen’s $1.277bn final tally.

A further $28.1m in North America resulted in $629m and means that after 13 days the space opera has overtaken Iron Man 3’s $623.4m final total to rank as the biggest Disney release of all time.

The Force Awakens grossed $36.7m for a $664.1m international running total to stand as the fifth biggest film of the year outside North America.

The film has reached $124.6m in the UK, $70.6m in Germany, $59.2m in France, $44.1m in Australia, $40.6m in Japan, $23.5m in Spain, $22.2m in Mexico and $22m in Italy.

South Korea has generated $19.9m, Russia $19.3m, Brazil $18.6m, Sweden $13.2m and Poland $11.2m.
