Warner Bros’ The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio arrived in style ahead of Wednesday’s [15] Cannes opening night screening as Iron Man 3 held on to number one on an estimated $72.4m.

After two weekend’s Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 has grossed $284.9m through Buena Vista and stands at $949m worldwide.

Baz Luhrmann directed The Great Gatsby, which also stars Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Tobey Maguire. The film launches internationally next week after its debut on the Croisette.

Tyler Perry Presents Peeples, an ensemble drama with Craig Robinson, Kerry Washington and David Alan Grier, arrived in fourth place on $4.5m through Lionsgate.

Another good result for Jeff Nichols’ Mud through Roadside Attractions saw the Southern drama stay in the top ten on $2.3m for $8.4m after three weekends. FilmNation produced and handles international sales.

Overall the top 12 grossed $152.6m, which fell 28% against last weekend and dropped marginally against the same session in 2012, when The Avengers entered its second weekend of release.

Next weekend’s wide release is Star Trek Into Darkness from paramount, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Benedict Cumberbatch. JJ Abrams directed from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof.
