Street Dance 3D beats studio tentpoles; Kites comes in at 5 on UK chart.

It was a good weekend for independent releases in the UK. As reported yesterday, Vertigo’s Street Dance 3D took $3.6m (£2.4m), including preview screenings, to top the chart. That beat Disney tentpole Prince of Persia which took $1.9m (£1.3m) on its first weekend.

Coming in at number 5 on the chart, the Reliance Big Pictures debut Kites had a strong showing. An unconventional love story about two immigrants, the film stars one of Bollywood’s biggest names, Hrithik Roshan, and South American actress Barbara Mori. The Indian production totalled $395,664 (£273,958) from 70 screens in the UK (and across the pond, it marked the first Indian film to break the US top 10).

Kites will get a second shot at the international box office on May 28, when a version of the film “remixed” by Brett Ratner will be launched.
