Stephen Chow’s Journey To The West: Conquering The Demons smashed records in China over the Chinese New Year holiday period, grossing $93.5m (RMB583m) in its opening week.

The film broke records for the highest weekly gross for any film in China; the biggest opening day for a local production, grossing $12.3m (RMB76.85m) on Feb 10; the biggest single-day gross for any film released in China with $19.6m (RMB122m) on Feb 14; and also became the fastest film in China to reach $100m in box office, taking just eight days.

Village Roadshow Pictures Asia (VRPA) jointly financed and co-produced the film with Chow’s Bingo Movie Development, Chinavision Media Group and Edko Films.

Chow has written, directed and produced the film, loosely based on Chinese classic Journey To The West, but this time does not star, leaving Huang Bo, Wen Zhang and Shu Qi to head the cast. Huang Bo also starred in China’s current highest-grossing local film of all time – Xu Zheng’s Lost In Thailand – which raked in $200m between December 2012 and January 2013.

Meanwhile, romantic comedy Say Yes!, also starring Huang Bo, opened on Feb 12 and grossed $20.7m in its opening week.

VRPA also jointly financed and co-produced the film with New Classics Media, Fuji TV and Asia Times Cultural Media. Also starring Lin Chi-ling and Godfrey Gao, the film is a remake of Fuji TV’s hit 1991 drama 101st Marriage Proposal. It grossed $7.5m (RMB47m) on Valentine’s Day (Feb 14).
