FEBRUARY 1 UPDATE: The third instalment of DreamWorks Animation’s family franchise opened top of the chats but scored the lowest debut in the series as overall box office for the top 12 climbed 25% on last week.

Kung Fu Panda 3 features regular voice star Jack Black alongside Jackie Chan, Bryan Cranston, Dustin Hoffman, Lucy Liu, JK Simmons, and Angelina Jolie and delivered a mighty $58.3m debut in China.

Fox/New Regency’s The Revenant fell to number two and has reached an impressive $138.6m in North America and $281.2m worldwide.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will become the first release in North America to cross $900m later this week and sits at $895.8m after seven weekends in release.

Disney’s adventure The Finest Hours starring Chris Pine arrived in fourth place on a disappointing $10.3m from 3,143 theatres, while Open Road debuted the drama spoof Fifty Shades Of Black from Marlon Wayans at number 10 on $5.9m from 2,075 sites.

Natalie Portman starred Jane Got A Gun finally opened via TWC after a disastrous production history at number 17 on a disappointing $835,572 from 1,210 theatres.

Box office for the top 12 gained 32% on the same session in 2015.

This week’s wide releases are: action comedy Pride And Prejudice And Zombies via Screen Gems; the Coen Bros’ Berlinale opener Hail, Caesar! Starring George Clooney through Universal; and romance The Choice through Lionsgsate.
