UPDATED JUNE 2: Disney’s Maleficent scored a better-than-estimated $106.1m international debut in 47 territories to beat Fox’s X-Men: Days Of Future Past as the studio crossed $2bn worldwide.

Combined with the $69.6m number one North American launch, the fantasy romp delivered a career-best domestic, international and global debut for Angelina Jolie.

Maleficent produced Disney’s biggest live-action opening weekend in Latin America behind Marvel releases and led the way in Mexico on $14.1m and Brazil on $6m.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International (WDSMPI) executives reported that the film opened at number one virtually everywhere and brought in $13m in Russia, $11m in the UK and $6.7m in Italy.

Elsewhere, Maleficent opened on $5.2m in Germany, $4.9m in France, $4m in the Philippines, $3.9m in both Australia and Spain and $3.8m in South Korea. There were number one debuts too in the Netherlands, Sweden, Ukraine, Poland, Austria and Finland. WDSMPI did not provide numbers for these markets.

Results across Europe drove the third biggest launch in the region for the year-to-date behind The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

IMAX venues accounted to approximately $9m of the worldwide total and $2.3m of international from 89 screens. Russia, France and the Middle East were standouts on $31,000, $30,000 and $50,000 per-screen averages. Maleficent is scheduled to arrive in China on June 20 followed by Japan on July 4.

Disney’s company-wide worldwide running total stands at $2.055bn, of which $1.419m comes from international markets and the $636m balance from North America.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier stands at $454m and $709.2m worldwide. Frozen added a further $5.8m to reach $832m and $1.23bn worldwide.

  • UPDATE: Fox International executives reported that X-Men: Days Of Future Past brought in a confirmed $95.6m from 75 markets to climb to $338.2m after only two sessions.

China was top of the class with a $22.3m number one hold following a 43% slip that propelled the running total to $79.6m.

Days Of Future Past also retained its number one status in France and South Korea on $8.5m for $20.7m and $7.2m for $23.9m, respectively. The South Korean performance has resulted in Fox’s third biggest release in the territory behind Avatar and Titanic.

The film grossed $5.9m for $32.8m in the UK and fell to number two behind Maleficent. In other number two finishes, the superhero saga delivered $4.9m for $16.3m in Brazil and $4.1m for $18.5m in Mexico, where it is already the biggest X-Men release.

Japan delivered a $3.5m debut on 653 screens for second place. The film stayed top in Australia on $4.2m for $13.9m.

Rio 2 added $5.2m from 57 markets to reach $338m. The Other Woman brought in a further $2.9m from 51 to stand at $93.4m.

  • UPDATE: The Tom Cruise sci-fi Edge Of Tomorrow stormed into 28 markets through Warner Bros Pictures International and grossed $20.1m from 4,940 screens.

The film, which also stars Emily Blunt and arrives in North America this week, scored $3.2m in the UK, $2.1m in Germany, $1.9m in Taiwan, $1.6m in Braziln and $1.5m in both Spain and Italy. Indonesia delivered $2m for a number one finish that delivered Cruise’s biggest debut in the market.

Edge Of Tomorrow arrived in Malaysia on $1.3m. In Latin America, Argentina, Colombia, Bolivia and Chile combined for $2.8m. The film opens in 36 markets later this week including China, Russia, Mexico, France and Australia.

Godzilla added $15.1m from 64 markets for just under $200m.

  • UPDATE: Sony Pictures Releasing International top brass said that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 grossed $3.1m from 81 territories to reach $496.5m.

The film has overtaken its predecessor’s $495.9m final international tally and for the time being at least continues to rank as the top international release of 2014 so far.

  • Universal Pictures International’s (UPI) comedy Neighbors crossed $200m as $7.6m from 39 territories boosted the international component to $79.3m.

The film opened at number three in Russia on $1.5m from 568 sites and ranked the same in Peru on $185,000 from 47.

Seth MacFarlane’s Western comedy A Million Ways To Die In The West opened day-and-date with North American in 21 territories, drawing $10.1m.

It arrived at number three in Germany on $2.9m from 606, placed fourth in the UK on $2.1m from 462 and third in Australia on $2.1m from 243.

Spanish sensation Ocho Apellidos Vascos (Family Affairs) has crossed $75m in Spain and stands at $75.4m after 12 weekends to rank third. Babysitting stands at $17.2m after 47 days in France. UPI distributes in France and Latin America.

Her, which UPI handles in South Korea, has grossed $1.2m after two sessions.
