Screen Gems’ rom-com Think Like A Man grossed an estimated $18m for an excellent $61m. Overall box office fell around 30% against the same weekend last year, although things should pick up when The Avengers opens.

Sony/Aardman Animation’s family release The Pirates! Band Of Misfits opened in second place on $11.4m as Warner Bros’ romance The Lucky One slipped to number three.

Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games added a terrific $11.3m in its sixth weekend and ranks fourth on $372.5m. Combined with the $228.5m the film has passed $600m at the worldwide box office.

Three other new releases debuted in the mid-table, led by Universal’s recent Tribeca Film Festival opener The Five-Year Engagement from the Judd Apatow factory. The comedy stars Emily Blunt, Jason Segel and Rhys Ifans arrived in fifth place on $11.2m.

The independent thriller Safe starring Jason Statham opened in sixth place through Lionsgate on $7.7m and another independent feature, The Raven with John Cusack, opened one place below on $7.3m.

Richard Linklater’s dark comedy Bernie starring Jack Black and the in-form Matthew McConaughey opened outside the top 20 through Millennium Entertainment on $90,400 from three sites for a tremendous $30,133 per-site average.

Sound Of My Voice opened through Fox Searchlight n $40.100 from five sites. The 2011 Sundance pick-up stars Brit Marling in the story of a cult.
