The Screen Gems thriller starring Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut claimed the North American box office crown at the weekend thanks to a $26.7m estimated debut from 2,221 theatres.

The Visit

M Night Shyamalan’s The Visit (pictured) finished a close second via Universal on $25.7m from 3,069.

Christian drama 90 Minutes In Heaven starring Kate Bosworth and Hayden Christensen arrived through Samuel Goldwyn in ninth place on $2.2m from 878 theatres.

The weekend session gained 30.2% on last weekend’s weak Labor Day session and climbed nearly 10% against the comparable period in 2014.

This week’s wide release are: Venice and Toronto hit Black Mass from Scott Cooper starring Johnny Depp, via Warner Bros; Fox’s YA sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials; and Paramount’s thriller Captive starring David Oyelowo and Kate Mara.
