Universal Pictures International has reached $1bn at the international box office in record time for the studio, crossing the target on May 31 to beat the previous mark of Jul 17.

The extraordinary pace of last weekend’s new release Fast & Furious 6 helped Universal accomplish its seventh consecutive $1bn year as the action thriller raced to $259.4m.

Other key drivers for the year-to-date include Les Misérables on $238.9m, Oblivion on $180.4m and Mama on $74.9m. Identity Thief stands at $39.8m.

Upcoming releases for the year include Despicable Me 2, 3D supernatural action adventure R.I.P.D. starring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds, genre title The Purge, the Simon Pegg and Nick Frost action comedy The World’s End, Kick-Ass 2, Working Title rom-com About Time, comedy The Best Man Holiday and the long-gestating 3D Keanu Reeves epic 47 Ronin.
