SEPTEMBER 7 UPDATE: The Christian drama climbed to the top of the charts as a dismal Labor Day weekend concluded the fifth biggest blockbuster season on record. Studios will report four-day numbers on Monday.

War Room

The summer session tracks approximately 4.8% ahead of 2014 on an estimated $4.25bn compared to $4.06bn last year.

2013 delivered the biggest summer on $4.85bn, followed by 2011 on $4.326bn, 2012 on $4.305bn and 2009 on $4.304bn.

War Room climbed one place to reach $27.9m in its second weekend, while erstwhile champion Straight Outta Compton from Universal had to see out summer at number two and has taken $150.2m over four weekends.

The star launch of the session came via Pantelion, which achieved its second biggest debut as family animation Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos arrived at number nine on $4.4m in 395 venues.

Pantelion’s biggest launch – the one that put it on the map – came in August 2013 when Instructions Not Included arrived at number four on $7.8m from 348 theatres and went on to amass $44.5m in North America and $54.6m internationally.

Broad Green opened its Bill Bryson adaptation A Walk In The Woods starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte at number three on $810.6m from 1,969 venues. The modest theatrical performance is expected to translate into strong ancillary uplift.

Rogue Nation ranks fourth through Paramount and has amassed $182.5m after six and crossed $500m at the worldwide box office over the weekend.

EuropaCorp’s action thriller The Transporter Refueled arrived at number five on a lacklustre $9m from 3,434.

This week’s wide releases are: M Night Shyamalan’s The Visit through Universal; thriller The Perfect Guy starring Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, Morris Chestnut via Screen Gems; and Christian drama 90 Minutes In Heaven starring Kate Bosworth and Hayden Christensen through Samuel Goldwyn
