Israeli title Broken Wings (pictured) by Nir Bergman won the Grand Prix at the 15th edition of the Tokyo International Film Festival which ended on Monday (November 4)

The Grand Prix (accompanied by a $83,000 (Y10m) cash prize) was the highlight of the event, which also featured a sneak preview of Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets.

The special jury prize ($16,000/Y2m) went to Japanese title Hotel Hibiscus, directed by Yuji Nakae, a comedy about a family that runs a motel in a southern island of Japan.

Other top awards went to Carlo Rola who took the best director award for Sass, Jason Xenopoulos who won the best screenplay with Promised Land - which he also directed, Donatella Finocchiaro who won best actress for Angela directed by Roberta Torre, Graham Greene who scooped the best actor award for US title Skins directed by Chris Eyre and a cinematographer Shao Dan who took the best artistic contribution award for Chinese title Sky Lovers directed by Jiang Quigmin.

The Asian Film Award went to Sri Lankan title Flying With One Wing directed by Asoka Handagama (pictured). The award, established in 1997 to encourage the development of the Asian film industry, was accompanied by a $8,300 (Y1m) cash prize. Asian films screening in the main competition section, Winds of Asia (formally called Cinema Prism) or the Tokyo Film Maker's Convention (comprising Nippon Cinema Now and The Japan Independent film festival) programmes were eligible for the award.

Earlier, the festival was overshadowed by its dropping City Of God, Blue Gate Crossing and Marooned Iraq: The Song Of My Homeland from the competition since they had already screened at other festivals. "At the end of August, when we finished selecting the competition films, their representatives signed agreements saying that they would not submit them to other festivals," explained TIFF general producer Michiyasu Kawauchi. "However, this problem occurred and we're now investigating. We intend take measures to prevent this from happening again in the future."

Although the TIFF missed Harrison Ford from its guest list receiving a sudden cancellation call one day before the opening, it successfully regained the buzz it has lost to other international festivals in Asia with Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise, who turned up for the opening day screening of Minority Report.
