Bollywood distributor Eros International enjoyed a substantial hit in the UK this weekend with Chalte Chalte.

The film had the third best Bollywood opening of all time in the territory and Eros' second best opening result ever. Taking $483,138 (£289,883) from 37 sites - a location average of $13,058 - Chalte Chalte took sixth position in the weekend UK/Ireland chart.

The result puts the film behind only Sometimes Happiness Sometimes Sorrow (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham) and Devdas in terms of UK Bollywood launches.

Sometimes Happiness Sometimes Sorrow grossed $788,925 (£473,355) from 41 sites for Yash Raj Films on Dec 14, 2001, and went on to gross $4.2m (£2.5m).

Devdas is still Eros' biggest opening with $777,283 (£466,370) from 54 sites on July 12 last year. Devdas grossed $2.9m (£1.7m) in total.

Chalte Chalte stars popular Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan, who also appeared in Devdas, and Rani Mukerjee. It was directed by Aziz Mirza.
