Valérie Donzelli’s tragicomedy about a young couple whose life is turned upside down when their baby son is found to have a malignant brain tumour has entered the Oscar race.
Valérie Donzelli’s Declaration of War (La Guerre est declarée) has been selected as France’s foreign language Oscar submission.
As every year, a selection committee overseen by the CNC, gathered at the organisation’s headquarters on Friday to make the choice.
The committee consisted of publisher and CNC official Paul Otchakowsky – Laurens, Cannes festival director Thierry Frémaux, actress Jeanne Moreau, directors Bertrand Blier, Luc Jacquet, Philippe Pollet-Villard and Alain Terzian, president of the Césars Academy.
Produced by Rectangle Productions, in association with Wild Bunch which is also handling international sales, Declaration of War opened Cannes Critics’ Week earlier this year. It has since proved a huge hit with critics and public alike.
In France, where it was released on August 31, the film has taken the box office by storm, attracting 357,059 spectators in its first two weeks on release.
The picture, starring Donzelli opposite actor and former real-life partner Jérémie Elkaim, is based on their real-life experiences when their son was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour.
