Latest action icon Vin Diesel enjoyed his biggest UK opening yet with Columbia TriStar's XXX at the weekend. The film, intended to be the first in a franchise for which part two is already scheduled for a 2004 release, took a mighty four-day opening gross (Oct 17-20) of $5.3m (£3.4m) from 435 sites.

XXX's three-day opening weekend (Friday Oct 18-Sunday Oct 20) scored $4.8m (£3.1m) for a muscular average of $10,944. This put its launch ahead of Diesel's previous highest UK openers, Saving Private Ryan, which grossed $4.2m (£2.7m) from 423 sites in 1998, and last year's The Fast And The Furious, which took $2.7m (£1.8m) from 414 locations - both were distributed by UIP.

XXX comfortably claimed the top spot in the chart with its three-day weekend gross nearly double that of second placed Lilo & Stitch, from BVI. Lilo & Stitch expanded to another 76 venues at the weekend in preparation for the schools half term holiday next week, and managed $2.4m (£1.53m) from 459 sites.

Last week's leader, UIP's Red Dragon, dropped off 41% from its opening weekend to take $2.3m (£1.49m), and third place, from 436 venues. The thriller's 10-day total stands at $9m (£5.8m).

Once again Entertainment's My Big Fat Greek Wedding enjoyed a relatively small drop off of just 27%, securing fourth place with $1.4m (£889,498) at 350 sites and bringing its total to $14.7m (£9.5m) after five weeks on release. BVI's Signs rounded out the top five and now boasts a cumulative score of $23.5m (£15.2m) after six weeks.

Winchester's comedy Slap Her, She's French was the second highest placed new entry in eighth with $325,774 (£210,450) from 157 sites. The film stars Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly) and Jane McGregor.

New distributor UGC Films scored a good opening for its debut release, Mike Leigh's All Or Nothing. The film took tenth place with $254,320 (£164,291) from just 55 venues for a solid average of $4,624.

Meanwhile Warner Bros' animation The Powerpuff Girls Movie managed just $142,426 (£92,007) from its 222 locations. Opening into a marketplace dominated by Lilo & Stitch the film landed 11th place with a weak average of $642.
