DreamWorks has optioned the rights to Platinum Studios' comic book Atlantis Rising created by Platinum chairman and CEO Scott Michael Rosenberg.

Atlantis Rising concerns an underground civilisation that reveals itself after a wave of heavy seismic activity and emerges as an enemy of man.

The property is a five-part miniseries that Platinum Studios Comics first published in November. The fifth and final instalment is due out at the end of the month.

This is the second Platinum property that DreamWorks has licensed after Cowboys And Aliens, which the studio licensed with Universal and is currently developing.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci brought the project to the studio and will produce through their DreamWorks-based company with Rosenberg.

The Greenberg Group CEO and former Universal Pictures senior executive Randy Greenberg will serve as executive producer.

'We are excited about bringing audiences into the vast mysterious world of the ocean's depths for what we hope will be an edge-of-your seat experience,' Adam Goodman, DreamWorks' president of production, said. 'Our team at DreamWorks looks forward to this new association with Platinum Studios, and Kurtzman and Orci.'

'Atlantis Rising is a provocative sci-fi thriller that at its core echoes the global debate on our impact to the environment,' Rosenberg added. 'To again be working with the creative duo of DreamWorks and Kurtzman/Orci, I believe will give the project a bold and enthralling take on this classic myth.'
