The Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) is to launch the CineMart-style Durban FilmMart (DFM).

The event is billed as the first international film co-production market on the African continent and will launch at this year’s DIFF, which runs from July 23-August 1.

Speaking to ScreenDaily, DIFF assistant manager Monica Rorvik said that the new venture aims to stimulate African film production by bringing African producers together with international film-makers, producers, and financiers for one-to-one meetings and the pitching of projects.

Projects with an African citizen attached to one of the creative roles of writer, director or producer are eligible to participate in the market, which will be open to live-action, animation and documentary features suitable for international co-production and distribution.

According to DFM’s organisers the goal is to create “a place to locate fundable African projects and encourage project collaboration between African film-makers from different African countries.”

This year’s DIFF will also host the third Talent Campus Durban from July 23-27 named Focusing On Africa: Unleashing Talent.
