Screen presents our international film preview 2011, of the hottest 50 projects readying for delivery in 2011.

Screen’s International Film Preview 2011 looks at 50 non-US films which are scheduled for delivery this year, from the most rarefied arthouse titles to those with the broadest commercial ambitions.

It is looking like a vintage year and A-list festival programmers will be salivating at the prospect of new titles from world-renowned names such as Pedro Almodovar, David Cronenberg, Wong Kar Wai, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Andrea Arnold, Lars von Trier, Aki Kaurismaki, Lou Ye and Bela Tarr. That could be half of this year’s Cannes Competition line-up just there.

But there are also some exciting audience-pleasers which will go up against the studio big guns in various territories. Tsui Hark’s first 3D film The Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate could follow Detective Dee And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame to become an Asian blockbuster; Jaume Balaguero has left [REC] behind for Spanish thriller Sleep Tight; Shah Rukh Khan is putting on his gangster shoes for eagerly awaited Bollywood sequel Don 2; and EuropaCorp in France will complete animated adventure A Monster In Paris in an attempt to produce a European smash in the vein of Pixar and DreamWorks Animation.

The UK, meanwhile, has a raft of mainstream local prospects including Horrid Henry, Attack The Block, One Day and Arthur Christmas.

We have sourced available stills, some exclusively, and it is exciting to see the scope of the talent working around the world, from big US names such as Robert De Niro, Michelle Williams, Naomi Watts and Anne Hathaway to A-list local stars such as Keira Knightley, Zhang Ziyi, Daniel Radcliffe, Monica Bellucci, Rachel Weisz, Antonio Banderas and Michael Fassbender.

(Profiles by Wendy Mitchell, Sarah Cooper, Andreas Wiseman, Mark Adams, Leon Forde, Edna Fainaru, Chris Evans, Jorn Rossing Jensen, Sandy George, Udita Jhunjhunwala and Jason Gray)

WUTHERING HEIGHTS (UK)

Dir: Andrea Arnold

The Oscar-winning British director takes on the Emily Bronte classic. But with Andrea Arnold’s output consisting of such singular, gritty dramas as Red Road and Fish Tank, it seems a given that this will not be a typically stuffy, corseted version.

The Ecosse/Film4 production is based on Olivia Hetreed’s adaptation of the novel. It will be set in 19th-century Yorkshire, but is expected to have a contemporary resonance in returning to the roots of the story about a teenage boy who is taken in by a wealthy family where he develops an intense relationship with his foster sister. Newcomers Kaya Scodelario and James Howson play Cathy and Heathcliff.

If finished in time, it will be a perfect fit for Cannes; Arnold’s two previous features both screened in Competition — and both won the jury prize.

HanWay has already sold to many territories, including Artificial Eye in the UK, Prokino in Germany, Alta in Spain, Transmission in Australia and Diaphana in France.
