Working on thrillers The Mandrake Experiment and Rift.

Possibly the most experienced of all the young Stars of Tomorrow, 33-year-old director Adam Wimpenny has made more than 100 hours of television for all the major UK networks and two very well-received shorts: Roar, with Russell Tovey and Jodie Whittaker, and First Time.

They were calling cards, he explains, for his company Wildcard Films, which he owns with producing partner Adam Morane-Griffiths and writer JS Hill. Together, they are working on the London-set conspiracy thriller The Mandrake Experiment, which has attracted interest from international financiers and is going into production this autumn. Yorkshire-bred, Wimpenny has a style which he describes as “considered — composed in an almost old-fashioned way”. Inspired by films such as The Parallax View and The Manchurian Candidate, The Mandrake Experiment will be followed early next year by supernatural thriller Rift. The aim is to shoot Rift in Bristol, but “we are ambitious in our scope”, says Wimpenny. “We want to make international films in the UK and use international talent to get them seen as widely as possible.”
