Co-pros: Danish Film Institute

Hot projects

With respect to Carl Th. Dreyer and Bille August, you could argue the current boom in Danish film-making started with the Dogme movement in 1995.

Danish film-makers such as Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg became household names with their innovative, stripped-down approaches to film-making. What’s even more impressive is that 18 years later, von Trier and Vinterberg have long moved on from Dogme but are still making challenging work that travels around the globe.

Strong government support is a big reason for the range of film-makers who have built careers in this relatively small nation. The Danish Film Institute is envied across the world for its levels of funding. And the newly launched Copenhagen Film Fund can help the country attract more foreign shoots.

Screen’s focus on Denmark looks at the hottest films in the pipeline, from veterans such as Soren Kragh-Jacobsen and Niels Arden Oplev, as well as some impressive newcomers.

Fans of Danish films have a lot to look forward to in 2013 - capped off by the launch of von Trier’s hotly anticipated Nymphomaniac on Christmas Day, the perfect holiday gift for anyone with an interest in auteur cinema.
