Hong Kong’s Distribution Workshop has picked up international rights to Monga, an edgy gangster drama from Taiwanese actor turned director “Doze” Niu Chen-zer.

The film, which recently wrapped, is set to receive the widest release ever for a local film in Taiwan when Warner Bros opens it on 120 prints in February next year.

Produced by Lee Lieh (Orz Boyz) and executive produced by Jimmy Huang (CapeNo.7), the film stars Ethan Juan Ching-tien and Mark Chao You-ting who are currently the hottest heartthrobs in Taiwan’s booming TV serials industry.

Set in the Monga district of Taipei, the film follows five teenagers who get dragged into gang rivalries in the days after the end of Taiwan’s military dictatorship. Originally a trading area between two rivers, and the birthplace of Taipei, Monga was torn apart by gang wars in the 1980s.

Niu, known by his nickname Doze, previously directed well received satire What On Earth Have I Done Wrong?!
