Epic Pictures Group has closed key territories at the EFM on Mega Spider, the upcoming SXSW entry known in the US as Big Ass Spider! Separately, co-heads Patrick Ewald and Shaked Berenson have hired sales veteran Catherine Quantschnigg.

Rights to Mega Spider have gone to Splendid for Germany and Benelux, FIP for France, Daro for CIS, Presidio for Japan, M Pictures for Thailand, Sonamu for South Korea, Star Alliance for China and Eagle Films for the Middle East.

Mike Mendez’s Mega Spider centres on a team of scientists and an exterminator who race to destroy a giant rampaging arachnid in Los Angeles. Ewald and Berenson produced and screen the film at EFM on Monday [11].

“Comedy and horror are real-life partners,” said Ewald. “The goal was to keep the audience terrified at one moment and then laughing the next.”

“With around 1,000 effects shots, finishing this movie has been a long ride and an international effort,” said Berenson.

Meanwhile Quantschnigg has joined the company as vp of international sales, European office.

“Catherine is a natural fit for our genre titles with her experience selling films such as Paranormal Activity and Insidious,” said Berenson.

Epic’s EFM sales slate includes Blood & Iron and Mall starring Vincent D’Onofrio, Gina Gershon, Peter Stormare and Mimi Rogers.
