Veteran actors Maximilian Schell and Mario Adorf have been cast in a new feature as philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.

The pair will star in Philippe Guez’s The Last Days Of Karl Marx, which will be co-produced with Mathias Schwerbrock’s Film Base Berlin.

“Karl Marx spent the last months of his life in Africa because he didn’t have a passport to go anywhere else,” said Schwerbrock.

The film will be shoot in Algiers later this year, from Oct to Nov. Part of the budget will be provided by the Algerian state.

The production should be followed at the end of the year by Indian-born Prashant Nair’s second feature, Umrika, which had been developed at the Sundance Lab and will be co-produced with France’s Bliss.

Schwerbrock told Screen: “We are now looking for an Indian co-producer and investors for this comedy-drama about the dream of getting to America.

“We are aiming for a film that will cross-over and work in all territories worldwide - not just India.”
