Berlinale to show restored Dr. Caligari

Berlinale Classics screening to include world premiere of John Zorn’s new music.

The 2014 Berlinale will screen a new completely digitally restored version of Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). It will screen in Berlinale Classics.

The film, considered an expressionist silent film classic, first screened in Berlin on Feb 26, 1920. Now the new version will play in the large concert hall at the Berliner Philharmonie on Feb 9, 2014. On the Karl-Schuke organ at the Berliner Philharmonie, John Zorn will play a new work commissioned for the film by ZDF/ARTE.

The extensive digital restoration of the film is being carried out by the Murnau-Stiftung in collaboration with the Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv and L`Immagine Ritrovata – Film Restoration & Conservation.

This presentation during Berlinale Classics is being organized by the Berlin International Film Festival in cooperation with the Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek, the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung, ZDF/ARTE and the Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker.

Berlin’s 64th edition runs Feb 6-16.
