Winners also include Garrone for Grand Prix and Reygadas for Best Director.

The Cannes 2012 jury, headed by Nanni Moretti, has awarded the Palme d’Or to Michael Haneke’s Love (Amour). Haneke’s last feature, The White Ribbon, won the Palme in 2009 — and this marks the first time a filmmaker has won back to back Palmes so quickly.

The Austrian director’s drama is a France-Germany-Austria production about the delicate, loving relationship between an elderly couple (Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant). See Screen review here.

In somewhat unexpected wins, the Grand Prix went to Matteo Garrone’s Reality and Best Director went to Carlos Reygadas for Post Tenebras Lux.

Best screenplay went to writer/director Cristian Mungiu for Beyond The Hills.

The jury prize went to Ken Loach’s The Angels’ Share.

Best actress was shared by Beyond The Hills co-stars Cosmina Stratan and Christina Flutor.

Mads Mikkelsen won best actor for his lead performance in Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt.

The Camera D’Or for best first feature across the sections went to Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts Of The Southern Wild, which also won Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize in January.

Critical favourites In The Fog by Sergei Loznitsa, Holy Motors by Leos Carax, and Rust And Bone by Jacques Audiard were shut out of the main prizes.

Love and Beyond the Hills led Screen’s jury of international critics (see full grid here).
