Restorations of Once Upon A Time In America, Tess and Jaws are among the films screening in the 2012 Cannes Classics programme.
Created in in 2004 and part of the Official Selection, Cannes Classics showcases restored prints of classic films and masterpieces, as well as documentaries on cinema and film masterclasses.
This year the programme includes 13 features, two shorts, a mini-concert and four documentaries. All will be world premieres.
The Film Foundation, chaired by Martin Scorsese, will present a restored and reconstructed print of Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In America with 25 minutes of additional scenes, based on the first cut by Leone in 1984.
Pathé will present Roman Polanski’s Tess and to celebrate its centenary Universal Pictures will present a restored print of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.
Other features screening include Alfred Hitchcock’s The Ring, David Lean’s Lawrence Of Arabia, Keisuke Kinoshita’s The Ballad Of Narayama, Roberto Rossellini’s Journey To Italy, Usmar Ismail’s After The Curfew, Uday Shankar’s Kalpana, Andrei Konchalovsky’s Runaway Train and Agnès Varda’s Cleo From 5 To 7.
Meanwhile, director Georges Lautner will be honoured with a screening of The Great Spy Chase, while there will be screenings of three films from the Dance Cinematheque in Paris – A Great Day In Harlem, An All Colored Vaudeville Show and Jammin The Blues.
Documentaries include Robert Weide’s Woody Allen: A Documentary, Gregg Barson’s Method To The Madness Of Jerry Lewis, Me And Me Dad by John Boorman’s daughter Katrine Boorman and Emmanuel Barnault’s film on Claude Miller Claude M Le Cinema.
The tribute to Claude Miller will continue into the festival’s closing ceremony with the screening of the director’s latest film, Theresa Desqueyroux, in Official Selection.
