CinemaChile touts R. Lorena, Hijo De Tranco

Chilean delegation also set to hold tribute to Raul Ruiz today in Cannes.

Constanza Arena [pictured], the new executive director of Chilean promotional body CinemaChile, has revealed details of two new projects coming to market.

Production house Forastero, the outfit behind Sundance winner La Nana and Rotterdam selection From Thursday Till Sunday, is presenting R. Lorena from writer-director Isidora Marras. Gregorio Gonzalez, renowned for spotting new directorial talent, will be the executive producer.

The second new film, from director Alan Fischer and production company Ant Fire, is Hijo De Tranco — a magical realist fable/coming of age story set on a remote Chilean island. “The tranco is a character like a dwarf, very ugly but with an incredible power to attack women,” explained Arena. “In the island, when women become pregnant without any known father, it is said that it is from the tranco.” The main protagonist is an adolescent who has grown up believing he is a son of the “tranco.”

Here in Cannes today, the Chilean delegation will be holding a tribute to Raul Ruiz, the great Chilean auteur (and regular Cannes attendee) who died last summer. Ruiz’s widow Valeria Samiento is expected to attend.

The Chileans are at in Cannes in force, with 45 delegates (their highest number ever) and with several films in official selection and in the market, among them Le Passion De Michelaneglo, directed by Esteban Larrain (handled in the market by Films Boutique), Ruiz’s final film La Noche De Enfrente and Pabloa Larrain’s No.
