Casablanca Pics debuts in Cannes
EXCLUSIVE: Casablanca Pictures has become the latest global sales and distribution company to enter the market and launches with Danny Roth’s coming-of-age story Tag starring Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
Partners Tony Kandah, Ron Gell and Anatol Chavez made the announcement on Thursday  and said the new venture would reach US theatrical distributors and major digital platforms in addition to international buyers.
Casablanca holds worldwide rights to Tag, described as an edgy teen film that also stars Jonathan Lipnicki. Randy Wayne and David Ball produced.
Gell negotiated the deal on behalf of Casablanca Pictures with Wayne and Straw Weisman.
Casablanca will represent his The G-Machine slate of features films and documentaries including Jay DiPietro’s Sundance premiere Peter & Vandy, Cannes 2007 Directors Fortnight entry PVC-1 and Lucky McKee’s thriller Roman starring Kristen Bell.
“Tag is a terrific film that fits well into our strategy in the US and foreign, [which is to focus] on marketing commercial, cast-driven independent films,” said Gell.
“Partnering with Mr Gell and Mr Chavez and forming Casablanca Pictures allows us to expand beyond our existing capabilities and positions our new company as a global force – able to nurture the talents of filmmakers, so they may focus on producing the highest quality films that meets the demands of seasoned and savvy buyers worldwide,” said Kandah.
Chavez added: “Casablanca Pictures brings a wealth of skill to a sales and distribution architecture we have worked hard to develop through our collective years of experience. These and other contributing factors make me extremely positive about working with Ron and Tony.”
